A spectator is asked to take any number of cards from the spread out cards and place them face down in a pile. The spectator is then told to square up the remaining cards of the deck and put the deck aside.

The spectator is asked to secretly count the number of cards in the pile. On counting them, for example, the spectator finds he has 11 cards.

He is then told to deal a second pile with the same number of cards from the deck and then a third pile, again with the same number of cards.

The spectator now has three piles of cards, each pile containing 11 cards, although there is no way for the magician to know this.

The magician tells the spectator to take 3 cards from the left pile and put them on the center pile.

Next the spectator is told to take 3 cards from the right pile and put them on the center pile.

The magician then asks the spectator to count the number of cards remaining in the left pile.
